The Fantasy Fallacy – Shannon Ethridge

This book was written in answer to the Fifty shades of Grey trilogy which had a lot of woman swooning over its content for the last couple of months as, unfortunately, sex is a topic that sells. Shannon Ethridge realized that now is the time to get a book out there that will be able to guide Christian’s into a place of healthy sexual fantasies. Into a place where we won’t be corrupted by what we read, see or hear,  but will rather be able understand where these fantasies come from and deal with them.

Fifty Shades of Grey is a book that flew to the top of best seller’s lists and into the houses of so many women, that it’s actually quite scary. I haven’t read the book, but I can tell you that it’s a book about a relationship that’s based on a signed contract that allows the man to hurt the girl any time he wants in the name of sexual pleasure. The girl falls in love with him and thinks she can change him. Leaving out a lot of detail, the base of this book is about pain bringing the ultimate sexual pleasure. Unfortunately Fifty Shades can lead to many women fantasizing about having the same or a similar experience, which brings a lot of questions to surface as a Christian.

In The Fantasy Fallacy, Shannon has an amazing way of answering these questions and putting it all out there. She helps you to expose the deeper meaning behind sexual thoughts, and teaches that sexual and emotional fantasies tend to reveal certain areas of trauma, brokenness, and disillusionment that are yet to be healed in your life. Often we have immense shame that goes with fantasizing and through this book you will learn what can be healthy and where to draw the line.

Some of  the most common sexual thoughts that can cause a lot of hurt down the line are dating a much older man or much younger woman, connecting with strangers via the internet, same sex experiences and fascination with pleasure, pain and power. Through The Fantasy Fallacy Shannon exposes these fantasies for what they are and a lot more. She sheds light on what they really mean and bring insight as to where they could stems from. Even if you are struggling with something that is so absurd that you can’t even categorize it, she has dealt with something similar and will be able to help you deal with it.

Understanding where your thoughts and fantasies come from is the first step to healthy sexuality, but along with that we need to be able to face them and Shannon gives you guidelines to do just that. The amazing thing is that God made us sexual beings and everything we have and can experience is from him. Sometimes we can twist and warp what he has intended to be pure, but there is always a way back into His will for you. Understanding this and working towards dealing with the fantasies, ultimately leads to freedom in all aspects of your life.

Here’s what Shannon had to say on why she wrote this book:

This is a great book that every Christian should read as it really just opens up your mind to a shameless understanding of your thoughts and how they can affect your fantasies and sexual health. If you are a mentor or leader, it is definitely a book to have on your shelf as a guideline to dealing with these types of issues. You can find more information on Shannon’s website as well as an awesome discussion guide that allows you to open up this conversation in a group.
